Farm to School Opportunities in Michigan: What do Food Service Directors Say?

Food service directors (FSDs) play a critical role in the nutrition of our youth.  Earlier this year, a survey sent to 664 FSDs across Michigan with 383 responding (58% response rate) consisted of twenty-four items which assessed the following areas:

  1. purchasing practices
  2. local sourcing
  3. interest in local sourcing, and
  4. motivation, concerns and barriers to local sourcing. 

Across the state FSDs reported a high degree of interest in sourcing from a local producer.  The report's authors from C.S. Mott Group for Sustainable Food Systems (now CRFS) at MSU and the Michigan Department of Education, along with many others throughout Michigan, are engaged in developing farm to school initiatives across the state that will assist local FSDs in implementing a program that both meets their needs to insure a healthy diet for our children while supporting and strengthening local and regional food systems in Michigan.
