J. Ian Gray, MSU's Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies, announced the creation of CRFS in the February 2, 2012 edition of his e-newsletter, Gray's Matters:

For more than a century and a half, Michigan State University has been known for its agricultural research, education, and outreach. That knowledge base in agriculture-related disciplines spans several colleges and programs across the university, and extends to communities well beyond the state of Michigan, reaching across the globe.
